    Gene banks are places where plant material is stored whose cultivation is abandoned for various reasons and is threatened by genetic erosion. The method of preservation depends on plant species. ... Fruit species that are vegetatively propagated to maintain clonal specificity are conserved in a kind of in vivo orchard. The Slovenian fruit gene bank is located in the Carthusian monastery in Pleterje. It includes 119 genotypes of apple (Malus domestica Borkh.), 48 genotypes of pear (Pyrus spp.), 7 genotypes of sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.), and 10 genotypes of walnut (Juglans regia L.). Genotypes for the gene bank were collected mainly in the northern part of the country—there are numerous local genetic resources still growing in other parts of the country that should also be included in the gene bank. Further collections of genetic resources in the future should be based not only on morphological markers but also on genotyping of the material to avoid collecting genetically the same material under different names (synonyms) and ignoring genetically different material under the same name (homonyms). This chapter gives an overview of the situation of the fruit gene bank in Slovenia. It describes a little bit of the foundation of the gene bank at the beginning and then presents the actual situation of the gene bank with its scope, financing, etc. The chapter also gives an insight into the genotyping of the collected material.
