  • Descriptive assessment in Slovenian music education [Elektronski vir]
    Sicherl-Kafol, Barbara ; Denac, Olga
The paper presents the basic principles of assessment in music education in Slovenia. In line with contemporary methods of teaching and learning, they include the use of holistic, authentic and ... practical aspects of assessment, attributing a more important role to formative assessment of learning processes and achievements. In this context, the focus is on formative feedback in music education which (potentially) has an important influence on the quality of lessons, and, consequently, on better learning achievements, as well as on students' attitude towards assessment and music. We conclude that the existing Slovene assessment doctrine should be upgraded by providing a closer link between formative and summative assessment. The formative assessment stage should be linked to the summative assessment phase so that the latter would consider the learning achievements acquired through various methods of authentic and holistic assessment. This way, the focus in summative assessments would be more on the quality of knowledge, including the non-cognitive aspects of learning achievements. Instead of merely focusing on learning results, assessment should contribute more to the creation of quality conditions for learning, which, after all, is the doctrine of a modern teaching approach. This was the framework of the study, in which we examined the competence of Slovenian teachers in descriptive assessment, particularly in music education. The research results showed that teachers in Slovenia are not up to the complex and demanding tasks of descriptive assessment yet. The processes of introducing changes in assessment require longer periods of preparations and solving of difficulties, as well as a gradual management of this issue. It seems that the implementation of descriptive assessment will require more intensive training of teachers, as well as raising parents' awareness.
