  • Motivational strategies in arts education in the second cycle of primary schooling

    Motivation plays a significant role in fostering pupils’ creativity and academic performance within the educational process. Theories of motivation highlight the importance of both intrinsic and ... extrinsic factors, as well as the teacher’s role in creating a stimulating learning environment — particularly in arts subjects, where self-expression and active participation are essential. A quantitative study was conducted involving 146 teachers (primary school teachers, music and visual arts educators) who teach the arts subjects of music and visual arts in Years 5 and 6 of Slovenian primary schools. The aim of the study was to examine which motivational strategies are employed in the teaching of these subjects, how these strategies influence pupil engagement, and which factors (e.g., teacher education, personal artistic experience) encourage their use. The results of the study indicate that teachers of artistic subjects most frequently use song singing in music education and various art techniques and mate-rials in visual arts as key motivational tools. The analysis of results related to the second hypothesis showed a significant correlation between teachers’ personal engagement in artistic activities and their more frequent use of specific motivational strategies, which contributes to greater pupil engagement and creative responses during art lessons. The study contributes to the understanding of effective use of motivational strategies in arts education.
