  • Nonlinear modeling of droplet detachment in laser metal droplet generation [Elektronski vir]
Jeromen, Andrej, 1975- ; Govekar, Edvard
Metal droplets have many potential applications in manufacturing like droplet welding and 3D structuring. In laser generation of metal droplets the tip of avertically fed metal wire is melted by a ... laser pulse. The outcome and the dynamics of sequential droplet generation are governed by detachment of pendent droplet that is influenced by numerous process variables. The complexity of this engineering process is additionally increased by the interaction between the laser pulse frequency and the eigen dynamics of a pendent droplet. In laser pulse frequency range between 70 Hz and 150 Hz, the dynamics of the pendent droplet resembles that of a spring-mass pendulum. Based on experimental observations a nonlinear model of spring-mass pendulum is developed. In the model, time dependent droplet mass and nonlinear stiffness are taken into account. The model is able to reproduce the basic dynamics of the pendent droplet and it predicts the diameters of detaching droplets. Results show that the model is in a good agreement with experimentally observed branch-like structures in detached droplet diameter vs. laser frequency diagram.
