  • The flow properties of mill bases with different rheological additives

    The rheological properties of an urethane-alkyd mill base with three different rheologica additives were investigated using a rotational rheometer under continous and oscillatory flow conditions. All ... samples exhibited plastic shear-thinning type of flow behaviour, which could be fitted to the Herschel-Bulkley model. Furthermore, all the systems manifested very remarkable non-linear viscoelasticity. From the results obtained under oscillatory flow conditions it could be infrared that Thixcin R and Bentone SD 3 particles were more aggregated and flocculated at rest conditions, which was reflected in higher values of dynamic functions, but the flocks and aggregates could easily be broken down under shear. On the other hand, a certain level of dispersion could exist in the Bentone SD 1 mill base, where the structural network of particles was stronger and more stable.
