Rezultati zdravljenja karcinoma ustne votline z radikalnim ali pooperativnim obsevanjem na Onkološkem inštitutu v Ljubljani : magistrsko deloPetrič, PrimožBackground. Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity is a disease of elderlymen, with the history of smoking and alcohol abuse. In Slovenia, the treatment results in this particular type of cancer ... have not been evaluated yet. Purpose. The aim of our study was to evaluate the treatment results of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity treated with radical or postoperative radiotherapy at the Institute of Oncology in Ljubljana. in the period between 1990 and 1995. Methods. The medical records of patients were used to collect the required data according to the protocol prepared in advance. The impact of individual clinical and histopathological factors on treatment outcome was evaluated by multivariate analysis. Results. One hundredforty-two patients were treated with the combination of surgery and postoperative radiotherapy, and 93 patients were irradiated with curative intent. In the first group, 53.6 % of patients had early tumors (stage T1 or T2), whereas in the second group, the proportion was 16.1 % (p<0.0001). The ratio of the patients without neck metastases at the time of diagnosis was 38 % : 29 % (p<0.0001) between the two groups. The average follow-up time in the patients alive at the end of the study was 80 months. For the whole group of patients (irrespective of mode of therapy), the probability of survival without local failure at five years was 62.2 %, without neck Failure 73.6 %, without any failure 59.2 %, and overall survival 30.9 %. From the multivariateanalysis results, the performance status of the patients and stagecT were found to be independent prognostic factors (p<0.05) for all four types of survival that were analyzed. The type of therapy retained its independent prognostic value only in the case of survival without local failure.
