  • Development of electric measurements for gas arrester characterization
    Pirih, Andrej ...
Different over-voltage shocks into an electric network can cause injuries in neighbouring high sensitive electronic devices. In order to prevent damages on equipment or in electrical installations ... and to protect lives, over-voltagesmust be reduced to a harmless level. Several surge protective devices (SPD) are used for this purpose and between them the gas filled arresters are very important. These are hermetically sealed cells, filled by aspecial gas mixture. At defined conditions it can become ionised - i.e. capable to conduct the electric current between isolated electrodes. From the quiescent state a gas arrester pass over the low impedance state, which allows it to discharge very high currents without any degradation of its function. Manufacturing technology has to assure demanded properties and they have to correspond to the international norms. During development it was recognized the testing of electric characteristics is very pretentious and needs special devices. So we have prepared the measuring methods and have been occupied with efforts to establish a laboratory with suitable equipment for experimental and later indistrial trials. The contribution represents a short description of the development and the testing of spark-over voltage, insulation resiatance, high current capability and folow current.
