Management v zdravstvenih organizacijah deluje v specifičnem okolju, značilnem za nepridobitne organizacije. Področje zdravstvenega varstva ureja država, ker je zdravljenje ljudi nacionalnega pomena. ... Na sistem zdravstvenega varstva, pa tudi na management v zdravstvenih organizacijah, močno vpliva zdravniška profesija. Za kulturo zdravniške profesije je značilno, da je usmerjena predvsem v medicinsko stroko, vrednostni sistem managementa pa temelji na usmerjenosti v organizacijo. Pri poslovodenju zdravstvenih organizacij je zato nujno upoštevanje obeh vidikov. V primerjavi z ostalimi udeleženci v sistemu zdravstvenega varstva so uporabniki zdravstvenih storitevv podrejenem položaju in skoraj popolnoma brez vpliva.
