  • Understanding onomatopoeia through sound symbolism and iconicity : diplomsko delo

    Although commonly used in daily communication, onomatopoeic words often get neglected in linguistics as they are considered peripheral and do not readily fit into the established linguistic ... frameworks. As a result, there are vague and confusing areas present in virtually every aspect of onomatopoeia. This thesis investigates the difficulties surrounding the notion of onomatopoeia and also looks at broader sound and meaning related fields that it is a part of. Onomatopoeic words do not merely imitate sounds but also function sound symbolically. They are unique because their phonological form is directly associated with their meaning. As such they are one of the most noticeable representatives in the field of iconicity and also one of the rare exceptions to the principle of arbitrariness. All of these topics are explored in this thesis with the purpose of better grasping and apprehending the elusive concept of onomatopoeia.
