  • Interactions of exterior finishes with DMDHEU treated pine wood

    We investigated interactions of exterior finishes with DMDHEU treated pine wood. The modified wood is hydrophobic and it was expected that its wettability with commercial water borne acrylic paints ... would not be sufficient. However, the contact angles of waterborne acrylic coatings on DMDHEU modified pine wood were lower in comparison with those on untreated pine wood substrate. The reason might be in chemical interactions between the modified wood and components of the coatings. Wetting of the modified wood with organic solvent based alkyd finishes was even better. Penetration of the coatings into wood was influenced by modification as well. It can be summarised that the tested commercial exterior coatings are compatible with DMDHEU modified pine wood.
