  • Structures and forces in nanoconfined liquid crystals [Elektronski vir]
Kralj, Samo ; Cvetko, Matej, 1981-
Liquid crystal (LC) structures are analyzed within a planparallel cell where different boundary conditions are imposed. Configurations are studied by means of Landau-de Gennes type approach. We ... analyze regimes where all geometrical scales of the system are larger but comparable to the relevant order parameter correlation length ▫$\xi_{b} \approx nm$▫. We show that varying conditions within the system result in qualitatively different structures. These changes can be well detected by mechanical force measurements. LC cells of our study could form a basic working material for susceptible soft matter-based nanodetectors sensitive at pN force changes.
