The article aims to investigate the potential of the CLIL approach fordeveloping intercultural competences. Of the four elements in theCLIL 4C framework, culture has been described as the least ... definedand developed. The study presented in this paper thus exploresways of using CLIL to enhance learners’ understandings andperceptions of culture. A mixed methods case study wasconducted aimed at analysing upper-secondary school students’perceptions of intercultural topics and their attitudes towardstheir own cultural heritage. The research involved 34 Slovenianstudents, 12 teachers, and a cultural heritage researcher. In thefirst stage, we designed a model (the CulCLIL model) forintegrating and enhancing the element of culture in the CLILclassroom. In the second stage, the model was implemented andevaluated during a four-month intervention which consisted of40 CLIL lessons. Data was collected with a student questionnaire, teacher observation sheet, semi-structured interview, student self-evaluation report, and focus group interview. The findingsindicate that the CulCLIL model effectively enhances students’critical and analytical understanding of their own culture. Byengaging with cultural heritage content, students acknowledgedits impact on their personal, cultural, and national identities, fostering introspection, self-discovery, and intercultural dialogue.
