  • Process to synthesize ultra-low frictional surfaces on light metals : acceptance number 144484, 2025-04-25
    Nadeem, Irfan ...
Aluminium (Al) alloys have poor surface properties like hardness and wear resistance and thus are not suitable for use under sliding wear conditions. The present invention proposed a unique method to ... synthesize ultra-low friction surfaces on aerospace-grade Aluminium alloys. Surfaces are sequentially processed to first deposit a hard ceramic coating of titanium nitride (TiN) with titanium interlayer using plasma-assisted physical vapour deposition (PAPVD), followed by creating micro-craters using laser surface texturing and then finally depositing solid lubricant coating, i.e., molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) particles embedded in an epoxy resin. TiN coating imparts hardness and load-bearing capacity to the alloy surfaces. The laser surface texturing (LST) technique creates micro-holes on TiN-coated aluminium alloy surfaces using pulsed fiber laser percussion drilling technology. Micro-holes of different spacing are generated to incorporate solid lubricant powder mixed with a resin-epoxy system. The tribological results show that the average friction coefficient of approximately 0.09 is achieved, which is desirable for ultra-low friction applications.
