Experiential learning has been widely recognized as an effective pedagogical approach in higher education that can enhance students’ engagement, motivation, and knowledge retention. In particular, ... curricular and co-curricular work-integrated learning activities, such as hackathons, practicums, and educational excursions, equip students with real-world, hands-on experiences that reinforce theoretical knowledge through interactions with the industry. This research work explores students’ perceptions of co-curricular excursions as a form of experiential learning in higher education, focusing on their perceived educational impacts, benefits, and challenges, including from a knowledge management perspective. Using a mixed-method approach, qualitative and quantitative data were collected through group reflections and a self-administered survey with postgraduate Master’s students who participated in two excursions as a part of an Advanced Software Engineering course. The research findings suggest that excursions are highly valued by students who recognize their benefits, namely in terms of providing real-world industry context to coursework, strengthening conceptual understanding, and exposure to emerging technologies and trends. Additionally, students report increased motivation, career inspiration, and networking opportunities as key outcomes of attending excursions. Compared to other learning activities, such as guest lectures and online courses, excursions are ranked highly for new knowledge acquisition yet should be considered complementary to traditional classroom-based teaching approaches.
