    Sb2O3-doped ZnO–Cr2O3-based varistor ceramics sintered at 1160°C and 1180°C were successfully developed for the fabrication of high-breakdown-voltage ZnO varistors. The appropriate sintering ... temperature leads to a superior electrical performance of the ZnO varistors: a high breakdown voltage (1339 V/mm), an excellent nonlinear coefficient (45) and a low leakage current (<0.2 μA/cm2). The high breakdown voltage is attributed to the small ZnO grain size and the high voltage drop per grain boundary. The low sintering temperature has the synergistic effect of increasing the breakdown voltage and the nonlinearity. Adjusting the sintering temperature of Sb2O3-doped ZnO–Cr2O3-based varistor ceramics is an important way to control the ZnO grain size of ZnO-Cr2O3-based varistors, and thus to obtain high breakdown voltages with highly nonlinear properties simultaneously, to fulfil the increasingly tough requirements for device miniaturization.
