  • Impurities removal from pharmaceutical wastewater by vacuum evaporation [Elektronski vir]
    Fekonja, Nika ...
Waste generated by the pharmaceutical industry, particularly production residues, requires effective treatment and disposal. This study focuses exclusively on waste streams that present the most ... significant challenges in the pharmaceutical industry plant. Consequently, waste streams from the pharmaceutical industry were treated, using vacuum evaporation at different operating pressures. Additionally, the potential of this method was investigated, with the evaporation and concentrate temperatures carefully monitored. The products obtained at the selected pressure were analysed for density, pH, conductivity, viscosity, and dry matter contents. In accordance with the principles of the circular economy, heat and water integration have been considered during the early stages of process development. During tests an on-site low temperature heat has been taken into consideration, and thus the tests were done at 50 mbar, ensuring the appropriate evaporation temperature below 60 °C. The distilled process water was considered for reuse in other processes, while the concentrate could be used in an incineration plant. This approach demonstrates the potential to reduce pollutant levels in pharmaceutical waste streams, promoting more sustainable and resource-efficient operations.
