  • Spray drying of residual pharmaceutical fermentation brot [Elektronski vir]
    Sankovič, Saša ...
The pharmaceutical industry often employs fermentation in the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), which results in spent fermentation broth. This broth is a watery and viscous ... suspension containing mycelium, residual APIs, nutrients, and proteins. Due to its high water content and complex composition, its transport and handling present technological and economic challenges. Drying emerges as a key approach to reduce waste volume and obtain a dry, energy-rich material. The experimental part of this study explores the potential of spray drying as an efficient method for water removal while simultaneously producing a stable powder product. At different temperatures, drying curves, drying parameters such as critical and equilibrium moisture contents, and the transition between the constant and falling drying phase were determined. The results showed that the broth can be successfully dried at various temperatures, and that the selection of appropriate parameters such as air flow, feed rate, and inlet temperature is essential for efficient and stable drying. The resulting powder products demonstrate potential for further energy or material use due to their high calorific value. Spray drying thus proves to be a promising technology for processing fermentation residues by reducing environmental impact and enhancing their usability.
