    The occupational medicine began to develop systematically in the early sixties, when first occupational health units in factories were established. The first generations of doctors were educated at ... the "Andrija Štampar" School of national Health and later the organisation of education was taken over by the Institute of Occupational medicine, which was established in 1971. Four years later it extended its activities to the traffic and sports medicine. The tasks of the institute were: pedagogic work, R and D and demanding routine work. Unifortunately, the set programme did not develop as was planned due to inadequate financing. In spite of this, the institute performed some of the tasks very successfully (above all the pedagogic activities). A number of occupational, traffic and sports medicine units were established at the basic level in Slovenia. They predominantly perform complex health care of workers. Radical changes in Slovenia have dictated a fundamental transformation of the previous activities. Different organisation and content of work should comprise basic health care activities as well as activities at the republic level. It is expected that the corresponding governmental bodies and the parliament will adopt and ensure the implementation of the changed programme of organisation in accordance with the adopted conventions of the International Labour Organisation No. 155 (Convention on Work Safety, Health Care and Working Environment) and the Convention No. 161 (Convention of Occupational Medicine Services). Consideration of these conventions is also a condition for joining the European Union.
